Belomorkanal

<begin>

Bojemoi,

I can’t sleep on this cursed manda of a ship. I awake most nights with a dream of a picture I once saw. I long distant uncle, or grandfather or the like… after the Great Revolution but before the Naizs… he was smoking a Blomorkanal and he looked like he was laughing at death as he smoked and stared into the lens.

Pizdet! This fucking crew, the useless scientists and the blyad of an XO. This manda tells us what to do. Get up in my fucking face and only backs down later when he learns that I’m Bratva. Ha! He should be scared of me if he ever gets near a court, much less Bratva.

I wake up angry, but I do not like to appear this way. I worry though. The Captain seems completely controlled by his crew. The scientist is useless. Complete academic. Our daughter has chosen to follow a drochit thinking she’s okhuyenno. Fuck. All seems bleak this night.

We found a kher yesterday, who was a low level thug to tried to spizdit our lives. I made him swear to me, but the oath of a liar is worth nothing. He is pizdets now. If he steps out he will be a pizdek.

As always, it’s my love that keeps me sane. So long ago we met and fell in love. Why we had to have a girl is beyond both he and I… and why we love her, that suchka, I have no idea.

So we will go and steal the dullard scientists equipments, deal with these peoples who I am scared will not adapt to this life. But I will protect my daughter and my husband. To any level and fuck the khuy who gets in the way. Mat is what I’ll do to them.

<end>

Little thieves are hanged. The great ones escape.

We receive $100K in precious metals, plus a laser turret for the guns. The deal goes down on Apishal.

A quarrel ensues over sleeping quarters. Gregor insists on taking special cargo as a suite, and wants the first class accommodations to stay empty for paying passengers. The XO screams at Gregor about his unreasonable demands for space. Caterine and her fathers have a long argument about this. We agree to let the research team stay in first class while the lab area is retrofitted for living quarters. Caterine confides in me that she is the daughter of Max and Gregor.

Someone is using a long-range transmission on the ship. Max, electronics operator, and Gregor, communications expert, are tasked to discover who it is.

Peng gets in trouble by making a move on Lynn, a member of the ship’s crew. She gives him a black eye for his indiscretion. Captain Bobo sees the security footage and gives Peng a tongue-lashing. The Captain informs me about the incident and I have a talk with Peng. Meanwhile, Gregor begins organizing a gambling event to fleece the crew of their meager monetary holdings.

As we head toward Nusku, we plan to steal lab equipment and information. I speak with Argent Tully, the ship’s expert on the Vilani Imperium to get ideas on how to proceed. Gregor speaks with his Russian contact about the Vilani Genome Project, and finds that any terminal at the Nusku University could give us the information. [Remember that the Villani aren’t curious and do not care about the origin of humans.] I would also like some basic reagents and equipment for molecular biology work.

Gregor’s poker game has been organized. The Michaels and Sherman are participating, as well as the Captain, Gregor, Lynn, and George. Sherman wins big!

On the fourth day that the surveillance equipment does not pick up the illegal transmission, Captain Bobo decides to toss the ship. Everyone goes to the special cargo hold to be quarantined while the Captain and the XO search for the signaling device. The crew are told that the duo must fix a minor radiation leak. Lt Jacob stays behind with us. The device was found behind an engineering panel in a common area. They replace it and make sure a camera is pointed at the area, telling no one at first.

Gregor suspects my Alexi, research associate, of hiding the device. He knows Alexi is junior in the Russian mob, in which Gregor is a minor captain. We watch on the security camera as Alexi goes straight to the engineering panel and removes the device. He is cornered by security and Gregor wants to torture and kill him. I offer to negotiate with Alexi instead. The research associate clearly thinks the world of me as a scientist and tells me so. To help me and save himself, Alexi offers to send false information to his source. He becomes a double agent.

Introductory session

We are humans from Terra. Extraterrestrial humans were discovered over 70 years ago after the development of jump drive. An American expedition found these humans out in space; they were unimpressed by us because they had been spacefaring for thousands of years. We eventually learned their language and were able to communicate. They don’t know why humans have populated the galaxy, and don’t seem to care. In 2170, I am an astroarcheologist and I want to know how/when/why humans populated the galaxy and details of our origins.

Gregor (Zalkabol) and Maximillian (Treaty) have a daughter named Caterine Tzonovich-Firmtool (28) who is a young post-doc scientist and a follower of mine. She convinced Gregor/Zalkabol and Max/Treaty to finance our journey into space, and hired Captain Bobo Phat (Bret) the ex-military guy to captain our space ship. We have a small crew and a staff of 10 scientists, including myself as principal investigator, a lab manager/senior scientist, Caterine and one other post-doc, two graduate students and three research associates.

Caterine’s parents (I don’t know they are her parents), and the other post-doc (Joseph Peng, DVM PhD, 30) are taking a space taxi to Ishimshulgi, a planet where I already have a lab established using independent funding. My lab manager/senior scientist (Jennifer Kim, MD PhD, 33) is coming with me, as well as Caterine, two of my graduate students (Michael Hunt 24 and Michael Hawk 26) and three recently hired research associates (Sherman Peacock, BSE, 40; Amelie Poulain, BS, 21; Alexei Romanov, BS, 28).

I get on the ship and my $60 million survey module and many other pieces of lab equipment have not yet been procured. I slowly realize that this is not the situation I thought it was going to be. In fact, the crew may be involved in shady activities. I am concerned but still very committed to doing my research, so I convince Jennifer to reassure the team that we will get our supplies, and I go along with the scheming crew. I need approximately $8,000/week to pay my team.

We go from Ishimshulgi to Nusku to Apishal, running guns for money.
